Johann I (Holstein-Kiel)
Johann I (* around 1229 ; † April 20, 1263 ) was Count of Holstein-Kiel (1261–1263) from the family of the Schauenburger .
Life
Johann was the eldest son of Count Adolf IV of Schauenburg and Holstein and his wife Heilwig von der Lippe . After his father withdrew to the Kiel monastery he had founded in 1239 , Johann ruled together with his younger brother Gerhard first under regency. He was involved in constant quarrels with his brother and the Bishop of Minden . At the division in 1261 he received Wagrien , Ostholstein and Segeberg and resided in Kiel . Stormarn , Plön and the native land of Schauenburg fell to his brother Gerhard, who resided in Itzehoe . In 1255 the brothers signed a trade agreement with Lübeck . Rendsburg , which had been regained from Denmark , was handed over to Johann by his brother Gerhard and received Segeberg in return . After his death, his sons ruled together under the reign of their uncle, but in 1273 they divided the property into the two lines of Kiel and Segeberg, which were reunited with Kiel after Adolf's death in 1308.
