Waldemar (Rostock)

Waldemar, lord of Rostock (* before 1241; † November 9, 1282 ) from the House of Mecklenburg was the sole lord of Rostock from 1266 to 1282 .

He was the second eldest son of Heinrich Borwin III. and his wife Sophie of Sweden († before June 24, 1241), daughter of King Erich X. His older brother Johann died before his father, so that Waldemar became sole ruler when his father went blind in 1266.

During Waldemar's government, several noble families immigrated from the neighboring rule of Mecklenburg , such as B. the families Axekow , Babbe and Moltke , who quickly gained greater political influence. From these, Waldemar also chose his head sesson and leading sovereign councilor: Johann Moltke in Toitenwinkel (1271/1309).

Waldemar died on November 9th, 1282 (November 10th is also possible but unlikely) and was buried in the Doberan Minster . According to sources, he went blind beforehand and shared his government with his sons. His sons Nikolaus, (Heinrich) Borwin IV. And Johann officially ruled under the rule of their mother until 1284, but in fact Johann Moltke determined the affairs of government during the guardianship. Waldemar was married to Agnes, a daughter of Count Johann I von Holstein-Kiel .
