The Nils Holgersson , named after the fairy tale " The Wonderful Adventures of Nils " by Selma Lagerlof was a RoPax - ferry the German ferry operator TT-Line .

history

The Lübeck Flender shipyard stretched the keel of a new ferry for the TT line on August 17, 1966 . Four months later, on December 21, 1966, the new building with construction number 562 was launched . The transfer to the TT line took place on June 1, 1967. The ferry was named Nils Holgersson , which the first ship of the TT line had already carried. This was already renamed Gösta Berling on December 1, 1966 . From June 4, 1967, the Nils Holgersson operated on the Travemünde - Trelleborg ferry line . This mission lasted until April 1975. From 1968 to 1969 Gigi and the Night Shadows (with Truck Stop founder Cisco Berndt ) was on-board band.

On April 10, 1975, the ship was named Oliver Twist , as the TT line put a new ferry into service as Nils Holgersson . The Oliver Twist wrong henceforth between Travemünde and Helsingborg . In addition, from May 1975 she was also on cruises in the Baltic Sea.

On April 19, 1978 the shipping company Lion Ferry AB chartered the Oliver Twist and used it as Europafärjan IV between Varberg and Grenaa , and from December 1978 between Helsingborg and Grenaa. On March 1, 1981, both ship charter and the line were transferred to DFDS . Even after a change of ownership - on October 19, 1983, a company from Halmstad bought the ship - the ferry remained in liner service between Sweden and Jutland . In October 1984 the ship was renamed Europafärjan Syd . Just one year later, on October 21, 1985, the ferry became the property of the Polish shipping company Polska Zeluga Baltycka, based in Kolobrzeg . She was named Lancut and was deployed from Swinoujscie to Ystad and Copenhagen .

In April 1994, the Valletta- based company European Seaways took over the ship. With the new name European Pride , it was used from June 1994 under the flag of Malta between Brindisi , Patras and Çeşme . In 1997, the ship sailed the Bari- Cesme route and was given a new owner by Lions Ferries, which is also based in Valletta. The following year the ferry was on the way between Bari and Igoumenitsa . Another change of ownership followed on November 13, 1998 and the ship was renamed Nettuno . But on June 17, 1999, Disegno Mar took over the ferry, which was henceforth called Hermes and was used between ports in Italy , Albania and Greece in the following years . On January 14, 2001, she was in the reflagging of Panama in Hermes V renamed.

After two more years of service in the Mediterranean , Disegno Mar sold the former Nils Holgersson in August 2003 for scrapping to India . On October 22, 2003, the ferry was beached at the scrapping yards near Alang and subsequently scrapped.

The Nils Holgersson was 123.5 m long and 18.01 m wide. Her maximum draft was 4.7 m. The ship, measured at 4,385 GRT and 1,807 NRT, was thus  slightly larger than its direct predecessor. The main advantage of the new ship was the continuous loading deck, which could also be loaded via a bow port , which considerably shortened loading and lay times. The first Nils Holgersson , on the other hand, only had a stern ramp, which made turning maneuvers necessary when mooring.

The ferry had a loading capacity of 1,100 t and had space for 230 cars or 20 trucks on the loading deck. In addition, 850 passengers could be on board. There were 350 beds available for them.

The drive consisted of two diesel engines with twelve cylinders each . They developed a total of 7,410 kW and were able to accelerate the ship to a top speed of 21.0 kn.
