After Hamburg is an album by the singer and songwriter Hannes Wader from 1989.

Emergence

Hannes Wader has not entered a studio since the production of the album Liebeslieder (1986). After the album Nach Hamburg the songwriter was canceled by his record company plans for political reasons. This album was therefore released, just like his next Hannes Wader singt Volkslieder (1990) with Mercury . The trouble with the record companies should not end after that and Wader was fired from Mercury in 1993 and landed back at Plans-ARIS in 1994.

The songwriter worked on this album and the Hamburg song cycle published there for three years after he had scaled back his political activities and largely withdrew from the public. After the global political changes, especially the reign of Gorbachev in the Soviet Union , Wader's worldview, which was his political home for twelve years, finally collapsed. In 1991 he finally resigned from the German Communist Party .

After Hamburg , Waders was the longest studio album to date. It takes 64:01 minutes. With eighteen songs, there had never been so many tracks on an album before.

Only his album New Friends (2007) with well-known, but newly recorded titles, exceeds these values ​​with 72:54 minutes and 20 songs.

Malcom Devenish and Detlef Petersen mixed the sound . They were responsible for the overdubs and the mix in Studio Maschen, Hamburg, where the German country group Truck Stop also produces their albums.

With Cisco Berndt and Teddy Ibing, two band members from Truck Stop also got involved.

Lydie Auvray returned to Wader after four years and played the accordion in "Cappuccino II".

In “To Hamburg”, Hannes Wader describes an excursion that he took as a teenager with some friends in a stolen car. After they couldn't find the Reeperbahn , they got off at the Landungsbrücken and drove back home after ten minutes. Wader also ironically reports on the little affairs that took place between boys and girls. This title can also be found on the album Auftritt: Hannes Wader (1998).

"The Kodiak Bear" is about a nightmare of the songwriter who visits a bear in a zoo, who turns into a monster before his eyes. Wader plays the keyboards here.

The song "Hamburg-Oregon" is a country song that is absolutely unusual in terms of music and rhythm. It is about a trucker who has wanderlust and is attracted to the distance, nature and the sea. This longing can be heard in many Wader songs, e.g. B. in "Unterwegs nach süd" on the album 7 songs .

The song "With Eva on the ice" is a classic love story. The protagonist gets to know a woman in Hamburg and develops the feeling of being with her and having to show her Hamburg. His dream does not come true and she moves on.

The title “Cappuccino I” deals with the topic of exclusion of other people. Wader describes how he feels excluded in a café because of his otherness, which makes him sad and offended. He admits there was a time when he would have liked to have belonged to the others. This was a time when he was socially worse off. But he also suggests that today he no longer wishes to bond with these people. It is a socially critical title.

In " Description of the Monument", the songwriter deals with the life of Heinrich Heine by describing the Heine monument on Hamburg's Rathausmarkt . Wader describes how he imagines Heine's suffering from his life. Hannes Wader can also imagine his suffering from homesickness in exile in Paris .

The song “Die Kinder vom Bullenhuser Damm” is about Jewish children who were executed by SS men . The text refers to the events around Kurt Heissmeyer , who worked as an SS doctor at Bullenhuser Damm and was responsible for the deaths of 20 children. He reminds that such people can still be active today undisturbed and receive little resistance. They sow the seeds of National Socialism in Germany and the songwriter calls for resistance.

In “Anke's Bioladen”, the songwriter deals critically and ironically with the relationship and behavior of vegetarians , but also with non-vegetarians. The lack of respect between these people is also an issue. This title can be found on the album Was für eine Nacht (2001), a document from the 2001 summer tour with Konstantin Wecker .

The song “Große Freiheit” deals critically and ironically with the red light district . The protagonist meets a prostitute with whom he finally feels sorry for and is therefore ready to change his life for her. This title can also be found on Was für eine Nacht (2001).

"Mondphase" is the only instrumental title that the songwriter has ever published.
