The cowboy hat is a typical piece of clothing for the North American cowboy and has its origins in the Mexican vaquero culture. With the occupation of the Mexican states Texas (1836), Nuevo Mexico (1846), and Alta California (1846) by the USA, the hat came to the USA. The first cowboys in today's USA were the Mexican vaqueros, who worked for the new masters after the territories were occupied and the Mexican owners were expropriated. The majority of the cowboys on the Cattletrails to the loading bays in Kansas were Mexicans.

description

The classic cowboy hat from the USA is the Stetson . This was developed by John B. Stetson , the son of a hat maker from Philadelphia , and manufactured for the first time in 1865. The undercoat of beaver fur was used as the material . This hair has excellent water-repellent properties, is light, keeps warm and has a light shine, which gives the Stetson its silky surface texture. However, beaver hair is extremely expensive, so a real Stetson can cost up to $ 2,000 today. For this reason, many of the Stetsons today - like the Australian Akubra  - are made of rabbit hair. However, cheaper Stetsons are also made by Stetson.

The typical shape is the cattleman with a wide brim that runs slightly upwards on the sides , a hat band made of rep or leather and the three indentations on the headboard. Versions made of straw  - created under Mexican influence - are also available.

There are various theories about the name ten gallon has for the cowboy hat. One says it is based on a misunderstanding. The Mexicans described the wide-brimmed hat made of high-quality materials as un sombrero tan galan , "a very gallant hat". Your English-speaking colleagues misunderstood this and called the hat ten gallon hat , a “ten- gallon hat”.
