Hatter is a craft occupation that deals with the production of hats and other headgear from materials such as felt , fabric , leather , fur or straw . The existence of a hat makers' guild in Nuremberg is documented as early as 1363 . Because of the mercury salts , which used to be common when processing felt , hat makers often suffered from hat maker syndrome (“crazy as a hat maker”).

Since the amendment of the training regulations in Germany in 2004, the official job title of the non-licensed trade has been Modist .
