Type Long-distance hiking trail

The Jurasteig is a circular hiking trail in Bavaria (and therefore not a long-distance hiking trail in the true sense of the word ), "whose main route ... almost comprehensively traces the scope and extent of the Upper Palatinate Alb in its compactness". Starting from Kelheim, it crosses the Upper Palatinate Jura for a distance of 237 km , also known as the Middle // Franconian Jura //, before returning to the starting point after 13 days. The highest and lowest points are marked by the // Habsberg // in the Lauterach-Kuppenalb and Matting (on the Danube). // Kastl // in the Lauterachtal and the Weltenburger Enge (// Danube breakthrough near Weltenburg //) mark the northernmost and southernmost stage point. An additional 18 loop routes (circular routes) are defined along the main route.

Route

The Jurasteig runs from Kelheim to the east in the Danube Valley , crosses the Danube at Poikam and reaches Bad Abbach . From there it goes north. At Matting the Danube is crossed on a ferry, and via Schönhofen you get to the Naab valley .

The Jurasteig follows the heights above the Naab valley upstream to Kallmünz , from there then the valley of the Vils . Here the path runs for a while along the eastern Albrand path of the Franconian Alb Association to Schmidmühlen .

The Hohenfels military training area is circled to the north. Via Hohenburg and Kastl, the path leads northwest to the Alb plateau in order to reach the Habsberg (621 m), the highest elevation of the entire route.

Now it goes on in a south-westerly direction. The path reaches the district of Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate and the valley of the Weißen Laber , which you follow to the south. Deining and Holnstein are the most important places on the river. At Dietfurt , the White Laber finally flows into the Altmühl .

The last part of the Jurasteig follows the Altmühltal to the southeast and largely coincides with the Altmühltal-Panoramaweg . Via Riedenburg and Essing you get to the Danube Valley above Weltenburg Abbey . You finally reach the starting point in Kelheim at the Liberation Hall .

The exact course of the routes can be found in OpenStreetMap .

Stages (main route)

The following division into 13 stages follows the website of the hiking trail (www.jurasteig.de).

mark

Marking the Jurasteig
Name of the Mariahilf loop

The marking of the main route of the Jurasteig is a stylized handwritten J in blue on a yellow background. The lettering ends in a line that can be interpreted as a rough sketch of mountains or rocks.

The colors of the loop paths are reversed. Here the background color is blue and the stylized J is yellow. In addition, there is also the name of the respective loop, also yellow on a blue background, and the addition “am Jurasteig”.

Award

The German Hiking Association audited the Jurasteig in October 2007 and on January 12, 2008 awarded it the rating of quality hiking trail in Germany . This makes the Jurasteig, after the Frankenweg , the Altmühltal-Panoramaweg , the Erzweg , the Franconian Mountain Path , the Frankenalb-Panoramaweg and the Zeugenbergrunde , another hiking trail in the Franconian Alb area with this award.

Others

An ultramarathon , the JUNUT (Jurasteig Nonstop Ultratrail), has been held every year since 2013 over the entire length of the Jurasteig.
