The Erzweg is a 150 km long hiking trail from Pegnitz ( Upper Franconia ) to Kastl ( Upper Palatinate ).

description

The Erzweg is a quality hiking trail in Eastern Bavaria and leads over 151 km from Pegnitz via Sulzbach-Rosenberg to Kastl. The Erzweg is characterized by a high proportion of natural paths and was last awarded the title "Wanderbaren Deutschland" by the German Hiking Association on September 3, 2010 .

The Erzweg leads through a landscape with deeply cut valleys, rolling hills and natural brook and river landscapes with wide forests. In addition, it leads past cultural and historical sites such as the Lichtenegg castle ruins , the Gothic town hall and the Sulzbach-Rosenberg castle , the Michelfeld monastery , the medieval ore town of Amberg and the market square of Pegnitz . Furthermore, it crosses the deer forest and ends at the market square of Kastl, above which the Romanesque monastery castle towers. There is a connection to the Jurasteig quality trail .

The main focus of the hiking trail is the 1000 year old mining tradition of the region. Extraction, smelting and trading of iron ore as well as the importance of the district as the "Ruhr area of the Middle Ages" have shaped the region and its culture. Examples are the Luxembourg mine near Kümmersbruck , the Maxhütte , Leonie mine and the Maffeischächte .

The route is supplemented by several main route variants and nine loop routes that are attached to the main route.

Detailed information on the main route and loop routes can be found in OpenStreetMap under Erzweg.
