Life

Johann Adam Schöpf was a son of the cabinet maker and sculptor Jakob Schöpf . After an apprenticeship with the Straubing painter Joseph Anton Merz, he went to Prague, where he has been documented since 1724. On June 2, 1726 he made a payment to the Old Town Painters' Brotherhood, which awarded him the title of master in the same year. On July 7, 1729, he became a citizen of Prague's Old Town . The painter Jan Karel Kovář was one of his Prague students . On April 8, 1742, Schöpf was expelled from Prague for political reasons, and he is said to have been accused of supporting the claims to the throne of the Bavarian Elector Karl Albrecht . Afterwards he stayed mostly in Munich. The Wittelsbach prince-bishop Clemens August , for whom he created numerous works for the penal area of Kurköln , appointed him court painter. In old age Schöpf moved to Egenburg, where his son Ignaz was pastor. Schöpf died there at the age of 70. His son Johann Nepomuk Schöpf was also a well-known painter and etcher.
