Owned by the von Schmieder family

The original mansion

According to the plans of the architect Gabriel von Seidl , the new castle of the client Karl August von Schmieder was built under the supervision of Iwan Bartcky from 1904 to 1908. The castle comprised 198 rooms on approx. 3800 m².

In addition to the main building, there were numerous other auxiliary buildings:

  • Two gate buildings - the west gate with a clock tower and the east gate with a fresco by Herterich, Munich, depicting St. George as a rider.
  • The stable building with parking spaces for a total of 19 horses, plus a large wagon shed, garages for the first two automobiles, a large crockery and tack room, apartments and rooms for the coachman, the laundress and rooms for the stable boys. In the building there was still a large laundry floor and a hay and straw store. A large glass roof in front of the entire stable area protected the horses from rain and snow when unclamping and unhitching
  • The gatehouse with coat of arms of the von Schmieder family with an apartment for the porter and the unmarried gardeners and horse boys.
  • The gardener's house with numerous greenhouses.
  • The bird house with aviaries for various ornamental birds and a water basin.
  • The forester's house at the northern end of the park.

Horticultural director Paul Lorenz from Zwickau was commissioned to plan and design the almost 20 hectare park. It included u. a. the Rosenhaag, an arcade made of iron construction with a 5 m high dome in the middle, as well as a tennis court with a spectator terrace and small changing rooms.

destruction

The castle became the property of the Reichsautobahnen on February 7, 1939 for 440,000 RM and was to be converted into the largest motorway service station in Germany. From 1943 the castle served as an office of the NSDAP in Lower Bavaria . On April 23, 1945, the main building was set on fire by SS troops in order to destroy the party files stored there. The fire brigades in the area were prohibited from attempting to extinguish the fire, and so the main building burned down. After the end of the war, the outbuildings served as refugee accommodation. The ruin of the manor house was demolished in 1955.

The palace and grounds have been privately owned since 1961. The outbuildings are partially rented. The tower of the main building, spared from destruction, is a listed building and can be seen from afar. The largely untouched castle park has the enchanting charm of a sleeping Sleeping Beauty's castle and contains numerous old, exquisite solitary trees from different countries.
