The castle was built at the end of the 11th century by the Counts of Bogen to secure their property. 1194 a castle captain "Bertholdus de Mitterfels" was mentioned. When the Counts of Bogen died out, the castle fell to the Wittelsbach family in 1242 . Between 1280 and 1799 they set up a ducal and then electoral care court here. Between 1799 and 1879 an electoral, then a royal district court was set up here, which was then converted into a Bavarian district court (1879–1973).
During the Thirty Years War (1623), Mitterfels Castle was destroyed by Swedish troops. In 1742 the castle was conquered again during the War of the Austrian Succession . In 1812, after the fortifications were demolished, an office building was built on the castle grounds.
