The Castle Haunkenzell is a monument in the village Haunkenzell the Lower Bavarian community Rattiszell in the district of Straubing-Bogen .

location

The former moated castle , built in the 16th century, is located in the west of the village on a pond fed by the Haunkenzeller Bach .

history

In the 18th century the castle belonged to the Dürnitz , the Asch and finally the Poißl (until 1828).

On February 15, 1783, Johann Nepomuk von Poissl, who became famous as a composer, was born at Haunkenzell Castle . His parents were Johann Nepomuk von Poyßl and Anna Maria von Poyßl, née Schüoff von Wildenwart .

In 1833 the property was divided and the castle and the divided castle land came into rural possession. The palace complex was used for agriculture until 1964. Then a stranger bought it with the promise to turn it into a tourist business and a farming museum. In fact, nothing happened, and so the moated castle became more and more a ruin. Today the castle is owned by the Hilmer family from Haunkenzell, who are trying to preserve it.

Haunkenzell Castle then and now

The castle was built in the 16th century and remodeled in the 17th and 18th centuries. An engraving by Michael Wening from 1721 shows Haunkenzell still as a moated castle . The three-storey building has a tower that protrudes over the roof and is covered with a pointed roof, as well as a sundial . Ox eyes can be seen in the upper part of the house wall on the east side and some dormers can be seen in the roof . The complex is protected by a simple wall and a moat. Various farm buildings can still be found in the castle ensemble.

Several parts of the building were demolished together with the corner towers and the castle chapel in the 19th century; the two remaining three-storey palace wings were used for agriculture on the ground floor. The northeastern part of the building has collapsed.

Today the former castle is still preserved as a hook-shaped construction of the former four-wing complex. The building is covered with a hipped roof; it has a gate tower and a corner tower, which is now covered with an onion hood . Remains of the former castle pond are still there. The palace was saved from further destruction by the Alfred and Elfriede Hilmer family with the help of the State Office for Monument Preservation through emergency safety measures .
