The first documented owner of Au is Berthold the Steinberger, who in 1325 promised the Oberalteich monastery a sea money that was also intended for his cousin of the same name von Steinburg and for his brother Heinrich. After the death of Berthold Steinberger von Au, in 1336 he also notarized a sea device foundation to the Windberg monastery . Then Berthold's son-in-law, the ducal court master Ulrich Leubolfinger, appears as Herr von Au. From 1381 to 1419 a Hartwig Leubolfinger von Au appears, who is also named as the owner of a vineyard in Tiefenthal . From 1433 we can find documentary evidence for a younger Ulrich Leubolfinger zu Au. In 1444 he sold a meadow to the Oberalteich monastery. In 1398 a Hanns von Au and in 1425 a Jakob von Au appear, but it is disputed whether they have a relationship with Au vorm Wald. Hartmann Leubolfinger zu Au has been attested since 1464. He and his wife Beatrix owned a meadow called the Breitwiese on the Bogen near Gaishausen for seven days and sold it to the Straubing Hospital in 1476.

Around 1485 a Wilhelm Heuraus appears as Herr von Au, who was Kastner zu Viechtach and then a district judge in Mitterfels . His sister Elsbeth married Hanns Hofer zum Lobenstein . From 1507 Georg Heuraus zu Au appears in a document; he was also a district judge and caretaker at Mitterfels Castle and appears in Au in 1530 as the owner of the Hofmarks . In the description of the Hofmarks from 1606, Au is referred to as the decided Hofmark.

Then Au came to the family of the Ammon (Amann) and remained in the possession of the lords of Ammon until the 18th century. Johann Georg Ammon married the owner of the Hofmark Rattiszell , Anna Cordula von Liebenzau. He then called himself Au and Rattiszell . In 1618 Georg Viktor Ammon married Katharina Eisengrain at Herrenfehlburg and Irschenbach Castle . This is how these two court stamps came to the Ammons. Georg Viktor Ammon appears after a wolf Ammon in 1628 in the country table as Herr von Au. Georg Viktor had two sons and a daughter. The latter, Maria Katharina von Ammon, married Johann Ludwig Wöhrner zu Gossersdorf in 1638. Ferdinand Franz received the Hofmark Au from the two sons of Georg Viktor Ammon († March 25, 1665); his grave slab is on the north wall of the parish church of Hunderdorf. The other son Ignaz Viktor von Ammon got Herrnfehlburg, Irschenbach and Rattiszell († 1681); in 1640 he married Eva Elisabeth von Köck zu Lohaim and Prunn. In 1681 Johann Wilhelm Ammon von und zu Au imposed the knight tax . He died in 1709 as the last of the Ammonites on Au vorm Wald. After him, Johann Joseph Freiherr von Schrenk-Notzing came to Adlhausen, who had married Maria Esther Genoveva Ammonin († 1727), the sister of Johann Wilhelm, in the possession of Au vorm Wald.

He was followed in 1763 by Baron Johann Zacharias Voith von Voithenberg auf Herogau and Au, a councilor in Straubing († 1808 at the age of 86). In 1818 the baron Johann Baptist von Schleich von Schönstett and Stephanskirchen, former lieutenant and landowner von Au, died . In 1841 a pharmacist named Vogt was named as the owner of the castle property.

The patrimonial court community Au emerged from the Hofmark in 1818 , at that time the patrimonial jurisdiction of the Hofmark had already passed to the district court Mitterfels. Until 1946 Au vorm Wald was an independent municipality in the district of Bogen with the districts Au vorm Wald, Brandstatt , Etz , Hasenquanten and Schafberg , then Au belonged to the municipality of Steinburg; this was dissolved in the course of the regional reform on April 30, 1978 and incorporated into the municipality of Hunderdorf.

Part of the former castle building in Au was used as a farm. On May 17, 1834, the Steinburg community bought the left part of the castle to build a school that continued teaching until 1959.

Castle Au vorm Wald then and now

The castle is one of the few almost completely preserved pond houses in this area. The complex dates from the 16th and 17th centuries and is a late renaissance building with two parallel wings. On the engraving by Michael Wening from 1721, the moated castle with attached chapel is clearly recognizable. A simple wooden bridge led over the moat to an entrance gate, above which there is a sundial. This passage from the south to the courtyard is still preserved today. A garden stretched out behind the castle.

A late Gothic , Baroque-style St. Valentin palace chapel is attached to the east wing of the complex.
