Degenberg Castle

The Castle Mountain Degen is the ruins of a medieval Spur castle on the southern ridge end of the "Degen's" 560 to 595 meters above the Danube in Degen Berg , a district of the market Schwarzach in the district of Straubing-Bogen in Bavaria .

The castle was the ancestral seat of the Lords of Degenberg , who were once ministerials to the Counts of Bogen . The family died out in 1602.

The castle was probably built around 1100. In 1186 a “Hugo de Tegernberch” was mentioned as a witness in a document from the convent ofprüfunging and in 1230 a “castrum Degenberg”. In the course of the Böckler War in 1468/69 the castle was conquered and burned down. In 1473 the Degenbergers had to commit themselves not to build any more castle on this mountain. Towards the end of the 16th century, they expanded Schwarzach into their manor.

The Romanesque or Gothic castle chapel of St. George was demolished in 1809.

Extensive remains of the wall of the castle complex are still preserved, which are listed as architectural monument D-2-78-187-28: “Ruins of Degenberg Castle, wall remains of the early medieval complex, which was destroyed in 1469; on the southern edge of the mountain of the same name ”and as a ground monument D-2-7042-0029:“ Burgstall Degenberg. Underground findings in the area of the broken castle of the high and late Middle Ages with St. George's Chapel are protected.
