George Chaponda

George Thapatula Chaponda (born November 1, 1942 in Mendulo ) is a Malawian politician and foreign minister of his country since June 19, 2014. He already held the post in 2004/2005.

Chaponda studied in India at Delhi University , where he graduated in history and political science. In 1976 he went on to study law for three years at the University of Zambia, which he perfected over four years at Yale University. Between 1984 and 2002, Chaponda worked as a lawyer for the United Nations Refugee Office, spending time in Somalia, Kenya, Thailand, Bangladesh, Switzerland, Austria, Poland and Ethiopia.

In 2004 Chaponda was elected to the Malawian parliament for the first time, where he represented the Mulanje South West district. In June of this year he was appointed Foreign Minister by the newly elected President Bingu wa Mutharika , which position he held until 2005. This was followed by responsibility for local government and land development. In May 2009 he was appointed Minister of Education after new elections; In 2010 he switched to the Justice and Constitutional Affairs department.
