Windberg Monastery with Blasius Fountain

File number: E-2-78-198-1

The Windberg Monastery ensemble includes the existing structures of the Premonstratensian Monastery of Windberg , some of which have been used for other purposes since the secularization of 1803.

Rising on a hill in an exposed location on the southern edge of the Bavarian Forest, the monastery was founded in 1142 at the castle seat of the Counts of Bogen and only taken over by the Premonstratensians in 1923 after secularization. The monastery basilica, which was essentially completed in 1167 , is part of the Hirsau sphere of influence and is the dominant building in the monastery district. The east wing and the unfinished south wing of the convent buildings, which have been newly built since 1720, connect to the south.

This Baroque transformation of the monastery, which also affected the basilica, including its tower, could not penetrate all parts of the monastery district. In the buildings on its west and north sides (chancellery, craftsman's house and office building) and the former prelature (Pfarrplatz 9), the late medieval character of the monastery has therefore been preserved.

Smaller hipped roof buildings that belong to the ensemble were built on the open spaces in the 19th century. Refectory and dormitory buildings were demolished in 1834; the parish church of St. Blasius, formerly adjoining the east side of the basilica, was also demolished in 1849–1854; only the cemetery and the Anna chapel on the north side of the basilica are reminiscent of the former juxtaposition of monastery and parish church.

The southern formerly fortified monastery district is joined to the north of the monastery gate, the only witness of this ring, the west and part of the north wing of a large former farmyard of the 17th and 18th centuries. Century.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
