From 1991 to 2011 he was Bavarian state chairman of the ÖDP and during this time shaped its profile; In this way, he received some media attention at least throughout Bavaria.
Life
Bernhard Guido Suttner is the youngest of five children of the CSU politician Bernhard Suttner (1907–1983), who was a member of the Bavarian Senate from 1972 to 1979 , and his wife Babette nee. Painful. Suttner is Catholic, married to the secondary school teacher Eva Suttner and has two children, a son and a daughter. In addition, Suttner has a foster son.
He studied political science , pedagogy and Christian social sciences in Regensburg and Munich with an MA. From 1976 to 1989 he did an honorary job at the Catholic educational institution in Windberg. Since then he has been a freelance speaker in adult education.
Political career
Beginnings (1972–1990)
In 1972 Suttner was briefly active in the Junge Union . A little later he left this again; in the same year he was a founding member of the Regensburg voter association Junge Alternative . In 1978 Suttner was involved in founding the Green Action Future (GAZ) and the Bavarian GRÜNEN. In 1980 he left - like almost all of the GAZ - after differences in content, because he was against the legalization of “ soft drugs ” and against the inclusion of far-left groups, for example . In the following period he participated in the formation of the ÖDP and was initially deputy state chairman in Bavaria.
In 1989 and 1990 he was instrumental in the overthrow of the then ÖDP federal chairman Herbert Gruhl , because he did not want to support his "opening to the right". Conversely, Gruhl saw the ÖDP in 1991 with the dominance of the wing around Suttner on the way to a “fundamentalist Christian party”.
State chairman of the Bavarian ÖDP (1991–2011)
At the state party conference on October 3, 1991 in Landshut , Suttner was elected to succeed Oswald Schönmüller as Bavarian state chairman of the ÖDP; he held this office for almost 20 years. Since 1990 he has been a member of the Windberg municipal council for the community of voters active Windberger Bürger (AWB) and a member of the district council for the ÖDP in the Straubing-Bogen district , where he has been the parliamentary leader of his party since 1996.
In the “super election year” of 1994, the party launched a campaign against genetic engineering on the occasion of the upcoming European elections . In the course of this, she had printed a poster on which the voting behavior of all German MEPs with regard to the labeling of genetically modified food was shown. The campaign had to be stopped when Suttner was threatened with a fine of 500,000 DM. He also became known nationwide through several popular initiatives launched by the ÖDP in Bavaria , in particular through the popular initiative “Lean State without Senate” . This initiative led to the dissolution of the Bavarian Senate. At the state party conference on June 28, 2008, Suttner was elected the top candidate for the Bavarian state election on September 28, 2008 . At the beginning of April 2008 he was nominated again as a direct candidate for the Straubing constituency without a dissenting vote .
On September 15 of the same year, just two weeks before the state elections, he made a remarkable appearance: A program was broadcast on Bayerischer Rundfunk that questioned the leading candidates for the small parties and in which Suttner the statements of the NPD politician who had appeared before him In his opinion, Sascha Roßmüller saw the moderation treated too uncritically. Suttner did not stop at pointing out this alleged deficiency, which the moderators defended with reference to “democratic practices”, but repeatedly emphasized the right-wing extremist position of the NPD and its top candidate. In addition, Suttner did not answer the questions addressed to him about the positions of the ÖDP and its differences to the Greens, to which he promised to come back at the beginning, and left the studio after about four minutes, referring to his emotional state.
At the state party conference in May 2011, Suttner did not stand in the election of the new state chairman. His successor was Klaus Mrasek.
Positions
The central guiding principle of the ÖDP - less is more
Suttner stuck to the ÖDP motto “ Less is more ” introduced by Herbert Gruhl , flanked it with his own interpretations and ultimately understood this to mean the need for a lifestyle that meant less “abundance” in industrialized countries and a better life in other parts of the world . Suttner sees the central difference between the GREEN and his party in the fact that the former are against an "ethics of renunciation" and raises the charge of " materialism ".
The 10 commandments - an ethic for everyday life in the 21st century
Suttner's rejection of "materialism" corresponds to his Christian orientation. In 1991 he gave an Ash Wednesday speech with the title “The 10 Commandments - ecologically speaking”. Suttner reinterprets the ten commandments from his ecological point of view. His lecture was published in 2007 as a booklet with 68 pages under the title The 10 Commandments - An Ethics for Everyday Life in the 21st Century .
