The picture archive of the ETH-Bibliothek secures, indexes and mediates the library's picture holdings. His picture collections of national and international importance document u. a. the development of ETH Zurich , research trips to distant countries, settlement development as well as social, political and technological historical changes in Switzerland.

The picture archive of the ETH-Bibliothek was founded in 2000 as an organizational unit of the ETH-Bibliothek. However, it looks after a large number of picture collections that have already been taken over by the library in the previous decades, especially as part of academic bequests.

Content focus

On the one hand, the picture archive of the ETH-Bibliothek includes picture holdings with direct reference to the history of ETH Zurich and its structural and personal development. These include in particular:

  • Views (from approx. 1860): historical photographs of buildings, institutes, lecture halls and laboratories at ETH Zurich
  • Portraits: portraits of former members and students of ETH Zurich as well as well-known scientists
  • Photo collections from institutes of the ETH Zurich: z. B. Geobotanical Institute / Rübel Foundation, Geological Institute, Institute for Aerodynamics, Institute for Monument Preservation (Georg Mörsch) or Photographic Institute
  • Photographs and drawings from the bequests of former professors at ETH Zurich: z. B. Albert Frey-Wyssling , Immanuel Friedlaender , Albert Heim , Arnold Heim , Robert Maillart , Leopold Ružička , Carl Schroeter , Leo Wehrli or Hans Leibundgut

On the other hand, the picture archive has, in part, very extensive picture collections with a broader reference to science and technology and topics such as civil aviation, landscape and settlement development, (industrial) architecture or nature photography:

  • Archive of the Luftbild Schweiz Foundation (1918–2011): Walter Mittelholzer's aerial photos of flights in Switzerland and to Persia, South Africa, Chad, Abyssinia, Spitsbergen or, as the first, over Mount Kilimanjaro , vertical and oblique photos of Switzerland, taken by Swissair Photo AG
  • Swissair photo archive (1931–2001): photographs and films on civil aviation, flight operations as well as aircraft and destinations of the former Swiss airline Swissair
  • Archive of the photo agency Comet Photo AG (1952–1999): press photos on topics such as architecture, culture, nature, politics, celebrities, sport, technology, traffic, etc., with reference to Switzerland
  • Views (from approx. 1860): Landscape and town views (focus on Switzerland)
  • Other private image bequests: Photo archive of the Documenta Natura Foundation , photo archive of the Industrial Culture Foundation of Dr. Hans-Peter Bärtschi, aerial photo archive of Air Color SA (Meyrin), nature photographs by Albert Krebs and the orchid photographs by Hans R. Reinhard

The visuals serve as the primary source of information and as a source for research into image production and use. Last but not least, the prints, negatives, glass slides and isolated films also demonstrate the technical development of the image medium.

Crowdsourcing

The picture archive has been actively crowdsourcing since 2009 . From 2009 to 2013, Swissair's photo archive was made accessible with the help of Swissair retirees. Since the end of 2015, it has been possible to comment on every image in the online image database E-Pics Bildarchiv Online. The image archive informs its large crowd community about the current work and projects in its own blog Crowdsourcing: News and experiences from the community. Since February 2018, georeferencing of images has also been possible on the collaborative platform sMapshot of the University of Economics and Engineering of the Canton of Vaud (HEIG-VD).

Publications

In the series of pictures (photographs from the picture archive of the ETH-Bibliothek), central holdings of the archive are presented thematically in text and pictures.
