Konrad Marwinski

Konrad Ferdinand Marwinski (born January 16, 1934 in Königsberg ; † July 22, 2019 in Weimar ) was a German historian and librarian .

Konrad Marwinski came to Thuringia after the end of the war. He passed the Abitur at the Eisenach grammar school. He completed specialist training as a librarian at academic libraries at the Deutsche Bücherei in Leipzig. At the University of Leipzig and the Humboldt University of Berlin , he took two distance learning courses in history and library studies. From 1956 he worked for 13 years at the Thuringian State Library in Weimar . From the summer of 1969 he was head of the information department at the Jena University Library and later became deputy director for acquisition and cataloging tasks. He received his doctorate in 1975 from the University of Leipzig with a thesis on Thuringian historical societies in the 19th century.

In April 1990 he took over the position of director of the Jena University Library. He held this position until he retired at the end of May 1999. His tasks included the modernization of the library and its integration into the German library system. He earned significant merits through the re-establishment of the Historical Commission for Thuringia and the re-establishment of the traditional Association for Thuringian History , of which he was chairman from May 1990 for more than two decades. On the occasion of his 80th birthday, he was elected an honorary member of the association. Marwinski became a member of the historical commissions for Thuringia , Saxony and Hesse . He was one of the co-editors of the journal Library Research and Practice .

His main focus was on the book and library system in its past and present, Thuringian history and the development of the Thuringian history associations. Marwinski was married to the librarian Felicitas Marwinski (1937–2019) from 1961 until her death, with whom he received the Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2018 .
