Niklaus Knubel

Niklaus Knubel (born October 17, 1841 in St. Niklaus ; † September 6, 1877 on Liskamm ) was a Swiss mountaineer and mountain guide from the Valais . He was a pioneer of women alpinism and enchaînements.

Pioneer of women's alpinism

In 1871, Niklaus Knubel was the first woman to lead Lucy Walker to the Matterhorn ( 4,357  m above sea level ). Margaret Claudia Brevoort was the first woman to traverse the Matterhorn from Zermatt to Breuil under his leadership in 1871 .

Knubel also led the first woman to the Weisshorn ( 4506  m above sea level ) and the Dent Blanche ( 4357  m above sea level ) in 1871 .

On July 23, 1877, the St. Niklaus mountain guides Niklaus Knubel and Josef Truffer climbed the Grenzsattel ( 4453  m above sea level ), the Grenzgipfel ( 4596  m above sea level ), the Dunantspitze / Ostspitze ( 4632  m above sea level ) and the Dufourspitze ( 4634  m above sea level ) of Monte Rosa .

Liskamm

On September 6, 1877, the three brothers Niklaus, Johannes and Peter Josef Knubel and their tourists had an accident on the Liskamm. About 150 meters below the summit, a puddle of snow broke in the east ridge of the Liskamm.
