Peter Knubel (* 1832 in St. Niklaus ; † April 6, 1919 ibid) was a Valais mountaineer and mountain guide . Peter Knubel was the first to climb Elbrus at 5642  m .

First to climb the highest mountain in Europe

In 1874 Peter Knubel led the first expedition to the Caucasus with Swiss participation. On July 26, 1874, he carried out the first ascent of the 5642  m high Elbrus . Knubel was also the first Swiss mountain guide to climb a mountain outside the Alps.

Matterhorn guide

In 1868 Peter Knubel was co-builder of the first Matterhorn hut on the Hörnligrat at 3818  m above sea level. M. and fellow second climber of the Hörnligrat each with his best friend Josef Marie Lochmatter , the founder and ancestor of the well-known St. Niklaus mountain guide dynasty.

At the age of 76, Peter Knubel still carried out Matterhorn tours, which are at least praised by guests in his guide book. Even when he was 80 years old, he had climbed “his” mountain with Bergfreunde.
