Brotherhood building, 19th century

The Brotherhood of the Apparition of God was an Orthodox brotherhood in Kiev from about 1615 to about 1700.

history

Around 1615 the brotherhood of nobles, citizens and clergy from Kiev was founded. Its seat was the Monastery of the Apparitions of God (Богоявленський монастир) in Kiev. Their goal was to strengthen the Orthodox denomination after the Union of Brest of 1596. It was founded without the consent of the Polish king. The Brotherhood School was founded around 1615.

In 1620 the Cossack hetman Petro Sahaidachnyj joined the brotherhood with his entire army. In that year, the former principal of the Hiob Borecki school was installed as the first Orthodox metropolitan of Kiev since 1596. In 1620 the brotherhood received the legal status of the Stauropegion by Patriarch Theophanes III. conferred by Jerusalem , which placed them directly under the patriarch and made them independent of the regional ecclesiastical hierarchy.

In 1629 the Polish King Sigismund III confirmed. your rights. In 1633 Metropolitan Petro Mohyla subordinated them directly to the monastery and thus abolished the Stauro region again. This gave the clergy a dominant position over the nobles and citizens.

Since 1648 Kiev was under the Cossacks and from 1667 belonged to the Russian Empire. The brotherhood has not been mentioned since the beginning of the 18th century (after the reforms of Peter the Great ).

school

In 1615 or 1616 the Brotherhood School was founded, following the example of other Orthodox Brotherhood schools. 1620 confirmed Patriarch Theophanes III. of Jerusalem her statute. It explains that the school taught Church Slavonic, Greek, Latin and Polish languages. At the school, students from Kiev and other areas of Poland-Lithuania, including important personalities, learned.

In 1631 it was merged with the Kiev Pechersk Lavra School and the Mohyla College was formed.
