Anja Sturm (* 1970 in Ithaca , New York , USA ) is a German lawyer . She became known to a wider public when she took on the defense of right-wing extremist Beate Zschäpe , a former member of the National Socialist Underground (NSU) terrorist group .

Life

Anja Sturm is a native of the United States . She grew up as the oldest of three siblings in Jülich . After studying law at the University of Bayreuth and at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel , she completed her legal traineeship at the Higher Regional Court in Berlin . She deepened her knowledge of supranational law at the EU Council of Ministers in Brussels and during longer stays in New York . In 1999 she started her own business as a lawyer in Berlin.

Sturm has been a specialist lawyer for criminal law since 2003 . After working in a law firm in Munich since 2004 , she switched to Weimann & Meyer in Berlin at the beginning of 2012, where she worked until July 2013.

Since the beginning of her legal practice, Sturm has worked as a defense lawyer in all areas of criminal law, in particular in commercial and medical criminal law as well as in capital criminal matters . During her time in Munich she was a defense lawyer in embezzlement and corruption proceedings in connection with companies such as Siemens , MAN and Bristol-Myers Squibb . She also defended in major fraud proceedings in connection with the companies Vodafone and ThyssenKrupp .

In capital criminal proceedings, she was a defense attorney before the State Protection Chamber in Munich in the trial against members of organized crime (“ Russian Mafia ”) in Bavaria, the Islamist trial at the Munich Higher Regional Court and in Regensburg in the so-called “murder without a corpse”.

Since August 2012, Sturm has been part of the defense team of Beate Zschäpe, together with Wolfgang Heer and Wolfgang Stahl , who was indicted as the main suspect in the NSU trial by the Attorney General along with four other suspects before the State Security Senate of the Munich Higher Regional Court. At first, Sturm worked as an unpaid defense attorney, and in December 2012 the Munich Higher Regional Court appointed her and Stahl to serve as public defenders .

After there had been disagreements in her Berlin law firm regarding the assumption of defense of Zschäpe in the NSU trial, an amicable separation was announced in July 2013. On August 1, 2013, Sturm moved to the law firm Wolfgang Heers in Cologne . Before that she had unsuccessfully tried to move to another law firm within Berlin.

Anja Sturm is married and the mother of twins.
