Anya Teixeira
Anya Teixeira (* 1913 ; † 1992 in London ) was a British photographer and photojournalist of Ukrainian origin.
biography
With the help of their uncle Morris Gest, who lived in New York, Teixeira's family fled to Berlin during the Russian February Revolution in 1917 , where they lived from 1924. The family fled Germany again from the National Socialists and reached England in April 1939. Although refugees were basically only allowed to work as domestic helpers or factory workers, she managed to obtain a work permit for office work; she worked several roles as a secretary until she retired in 1975. With her earnings she also supported the impoverished Maria Vorobjowa in her artistic work.
Teixeira's interest in photography developed from a hobby to a vocation by 1960. In the early 1960s she co-founded the London Creative Photo Group , which was recognized in the book A Concise History of Photography (London: Thames & Hudson, 1965) by the photo historians Helmut and Alison Gernsheim .
