Eugene I (depiction in the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls )

St. Eugene I (date of birth unknown, † June 2, 657 ) was elected Pope on August 10, 654 as successor to Martin I , although his predecessor was still alive.

Life

The reason for Eugen's election as Pope was probably the assumption that he could contribute to a reconciliation with Byzantium under Emperor Constans II , who was largely responsible for the deposition of Pope Martin, and Patriarch Petros . Especially in the dispute over monotheletism , it was suspected that Eugene would adopt a conciliatory attitude. When there was ultimately no reconciliation, Eugen was also threatened with forcible deposition by the Byzantine emperor. However, he died without any escalation.

Afterlife

Eugene I was canonized . The patronage festival is on the day of his death, i.e. June 2nd.
