- July 26th : Islamic expansion : Battle of Siffin on the Euphrates : Caliph Ali ibn Abi Talib and his challenger Muawiya , the governor of Syria , fight a bloody battle lasting several days, which ends without a clear winner. The fact that Ali finally agrees to arbitration leads to the separation of the Kharijites from the Shiites .
