Islamic expansion
- January 22 : Assassination by the Kharijites on caliph Ali ibn Abi Talib , who succumbs on January 24th . As a result, the Umayyads under Muawiya I are recognized by the majority as caliphs of the Muslims . On the other hand, the Shiites see Ali's sons Hasan ibn ʿAlī and Husain ibn ʿAlī as legitimate successors who, however, cannot assert themselves politically.
