Asia
ʿAlī ibn Abī Tālib is elected fourth Muslim caliph after the assassination of ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān on June 17th . He hesitates at first, but accepts the homage five days later. However, he is not generally recognized by, among others, Aisha bint Abi Bakr , Talha ibn ʿUbaidallāh , az-Zubair ibn al-ʿAuwām and Muawiya , who accuse him of the murder of his predecessor.
On December 9th, the Camel Battle of Basra takes place: Caliph ʿAlī ibn Abī Tālib defeats the opposition to his rule without being able to crush them. As a result, Ali's opponents rallied around the Umayyad Muawiya, the governor of Syria .
Europe
The caretaker of the Franconian part of Austrasia , Grimoald , a son of Pippin the Elder , uses the death of the Austrasian King Sigibert III. on the coup d'état: he raises his own son as Childebertus adoptivus to be Sigibert's successor, while he has Sigibert's son Dagobert II , who is still a toddler at the time, brought to a monastery in Ireland . There is opposition to Grimoald's action in Neustria . The local king Clovis II and his caretaker Ebroin ensure that Grimoald is disempowered; he dies in dungeon in 656 or 657. The Austrasian kingship of Childebertus adoptivus is evidently not affected.
