Eastern Roman Empire
- Balkan campaigns of Maurikios : The Avars surprisingly attack the Eastern Roman Empire and enclose the imperial army in Tomis on the Black Sea.
- Emperor Maurikios falls seriously ill and arranges his succession: his older son is to succeed him as emperor in Constantinople , while the second-born will renew the Western Roman Empire and reside in Rome . The other two sons may be designated as sub-emperors. The regulation never comes into force.

- Spring: Augustine lands with his companions, sent to England by Pope Gregory the Great , on the island of Thanet on the Thames estuary. The King of Kent , Æthelberht, invites you to take your seat in Canterbury . In the same year Augustine founds the St. Augustine Abbey . Æthelberht himself is probably baptized around 601 .
