Zhi Yi (* 538 ; † 597 ) was the founder of Tiantai Buddhism .

As a representative of the Buddhist religion in China, Zhi Yi enjoyed the goodwill of the Sui Emperor Yangdi . When this Crown Prince was Wendi during the reign of his father , Zhi Yi's mountain monastery received regular payments from state funds. This was also connected with the legitimizing role that Buddhism gave the new dynasty.
