- from around 580: The southern Slavs move south in front of the Avars , cross the Danube and begin to conquer the Eastern Roman Empire in the area of today's Bulgaria , Serbia , North Macedonia and northern Greece ; in the next few decades they even penetrated to the Peloponnese (Slavic place names).
