The General-von-Stein-Kaserne was a barracks in Freising until 2004 .

The barracks were built in 1936/37 as part of the armament of the Wehrmacht on the road towards Mainburg . The 7th Artillery Regiment was initially housed here. This also led to the name artillery barracks used at the beginning . The barracks was named after Hermann Freiherr von Stein , a Bavarian general of the artillery in the First World War. From 1939 the driver replacement department 7 was based here, between 1942 and 1945 the replacement department of the 7th Artillery Regiment . After 1945 the barracks were occupied by the US Air Force ; The 604th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron was located here from 1948 to 1957 .

On July 18, 1957, the barracks were officially handed over to the Bundeswehr Air Force . Since March 1, 1957, however, the temporary accommodation of the ground service squadron of the Erding Air Base Group was here (until the end of 1959). The air transport squadron 61 (1958/59), the Bundeswehr technical school (1958-62), the Freising site administration (1957/58), the staff II./FmRgt 31 (1958-66), the heavy one, were only located in the barracks for a short time Motor vehicle and transport squadron of the Air Force Park Regiment I, as well as the II. Battalion of the Air Force Training Regiment 4 (1960).

The longest stationed unit here was the anti-aircraft missile battalion 32 (1989 anti-aircraft missile squadron 32 ). Coming from Kempten , it was from June 1, 1963 until it was dissolved on December 31, 1992 in the General von Stein barracks. After dissolution, three squadrons of the squadron under the leadership of anti-aircraft missile groups 33 and 34 respectively remained in the barracks until the end of 2002 and were then also disbanded. The units had been equipped with MIM-23 HAWK since 1964 . In addition, the headquarters of the anti-aircraft missile regiment 1 was located here between 1967 and 1984. The last extension was built in 1988 with the new farm building next to the sports hall. After the Cold War ended , the last military user was Radar Guidance Section 24 , which came here from Vimy Barracks in 1993 . In 2004 the association was dissolved as part of the restructuring of the Bundeswehr and the barracks closed as a military base. The radar near Haindlfing has been operated by a detached train since then.

After the withdrawal of the Bundeswehr, two accommodation buildings were temporarily occupied by the federal police . The staff building was used by the adult education center, the state technical college, the vocational school and the Weihenstephan citizen network. Since 2010 the site has been converted into a residential area ( stone park). For this purpose, all buildings except for the staff building were demolished. So far, next to residential buildings, a day-care center has been built and commercial buildings ( SteinCenter ) along the main road . A primary and secondary school has been under construction since 2019 and is scheduled to start operating in the school year 2022/23.
