Otto Schmidt , since 1871 Ritter von Schmidt (born December 20, 1820 in Aschaffenburg , † October 18, 1902 ) was a Bavarian general of the infantry .
Life
origin
Otto was the son of the Bavarian Major General Johann Nepomuk Schmidt and his wife Wilhelmine Katharina, née von Wallmenich.
Military career
After visiting the Cadet Corps in Munich, Schmidt was transferred to the 10th Infantry Regiment "Albert Papenheim" of the Bavarian Army on August 11, 1840 as a flag squire. He was promoted to lieutenant by the end of April 1841 , was transferred to the 3rd Infantry Regiment "Prince Karl" in mid-December 1843 and in August 1848 was promoted to lieutenant . At the end of June 1854 he was transferred back to the 10th Infantry Regiment "Albert Papenheim" while being promoted to Captain II. In September 1858 Schmidt took part in the maneuvers of the X Federal Corps near Hanover during a three-week vacation . As captain first class, he was transferred to the quartermaster's staff on November 3, 1861 , and on May 20, 1862, he was assigned to the general command in Munich as a general staff officer . A year later, Schmidt advanced to major and returned to the Central Office of the General Staff the following month.
In the war against Prussia in 1866 Schmidt was commanded to serve in the headquarters of the VII Bundeskorps and took part in the battles near Dernbach , Kissingen and Roßbrunn . After the armistice , he was appointed commander of the 1st Jäger Battalion "König" on July 30, 1866 . In this position Schmidt received the Knight's Cross First Class of the Order of Merit of St. Michael in January 1868 and advanced to lieutenant colonel at the end of May of the same year .
Schmidt led his hunters during the war against France in the battles near Beaumont , Sedan and in October / November 1870 near Orléans . Promoted to colonel , he was appointed commander of the 11th Infantry Regiment "von der Tann" on November 10, 1870 , with whom he took part in the further battles of the Loire campaign. After a chapter of the order , which was chaired by Lieutenant General von Maillinger , voted unanimously for his acceptance into the Military Max Joseph Order , Schmidt was awarded the Knight's Cross for his behavior during the battle at Beaumont. The personal nobility was associated with the loan and after being entered in the Bavarian nobility register, he was allowed to call himself “Ritter von Schmidt”. In addition, in mid-July 1871 he was awarded the Commander-in-Chief of the Order of Military Merit with Swords and at the beginning of August 1871 he was given permission to wear the Iron Cross 1st Class.
Schmidt was promoted to major general on December 4, 1874, commander of the 4th Infantry Brigade in Ingolstadt and on August 19, 1880 with the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown . As lieutenant general, he was commander of the 2nd division in Augsburg from March 1, 1882 . After Schmidt had received the Grand Cross of the Order of Military Merit in December 1886 , he was put up for disposition on March 4, 1887, with the award of the character of General of the Infantry in approval of his resignation request with a pension .

Schmidt was married to Maria Steiger. The later Bavarian general of the cavalry Otto von Schmidt emerged from the marriage.
