Divisions

Since 1803 the army was divided into divisions and brigades. In 1804 these were renamed to inspections, in 1807 provisionally to four general commands. 1815 these were reduced to two and finally dissolved in 1822. For this purpose, four (infantry) army division commands were set up. In 1848 there were four infantry divisions and two cavalry divisions. In 1851 these were disbanded and four (infantry) army divisions took their place again. In 1872 the army divisions were renamed divisions. A 5th division was set up in 1890 and a 6th in 1900. With the mobilization in August 1914, the divisions were uniformly renamed into infantry divisions.

Brigades

infantry

In 1803 infantry brigades were established. It was only since 1815 that these had been distributed relatively evenly among the general commands and army division commands. In the course of economy measures, the brigade commandos of infantry and cavalry were dissolved in 1826. As part of the Bavarian army reform in 1868, the brigades revived and were numbered consecutively. In addition to the eight existing infantry brigades, the Bavarian occupation brigade in Metz was added in 1871 and three other infantry brigades between 1880 and 1897. When the war began in 1914, twelve infantry brigades took to the field.

infantry

In 1815 there were 17 infantry regiments (Infantry Body Regiment and 1st to 16th Infantry Regiment). The 16th Infantry Regiment was disbanded in 1825 to form two Jäger battalions. In the course of the increase in the army, eight further infantry regiments were created between 1878 and 1897, some of them using the previous fighter battalions. At the beginning of the war in 1914, the infantry consisted of 24 regiments and two fighter battalions. With the mobilization and during the war there were many new formations.

Remarks

  1. ↑ Peaceful location of the staff. War formations were usually set up by replacement troop units during the war and did not have their own location or garrison .
  2. The existing literature and sources are not clear whether there actually was a reserve regiment.
  3. Not sure.
  4. Abbreviation for "composite".
