history
First World War
The brigade under its commander Major General Karl Riedl was deployed in its garrison town and fortress Metz at the beginning of the First World War , but was replaced by the 5th Reserve Infantry Brigade at the beginning of August 1914. The brigade was subordinated to the 5th Army (Saarbrücken), separately from the bulk of the Bavarian troops. During the Battle of Lorraine on August 20 and 21, 1914, the brigade supported the attack of the 6th Army on the right flank by advancing from south of Metz to Nomeny. On the evening of August 20, Nomeny was taken and was held despite French counter-attacks. On August 25, 1914, the brigade was on the left wing of the 5th Army near Rouvres, where it was attacked on the flank by far superior French troops. But she rejected the attacks, so that they collapsed by the evening. From September 29, 1914, the brigade was deployed on the heights of Combres. The French attempted to take the heights again with sapphire, mine and open field attacks, but the brigade held out for months.
