Gustav Waagen , since 1892 Knight of Waagen (born April 29, 1832 in Munich , † December 25, 1906 there ) was a Bavarian major general .

Life

origin

He was the son of of Hamburg coming, converted to Catholicism painter and writer Carl Scales (1800-1873) and his wife, the singer Nanette Schechner (1806-1860). The father Carl Waagen was the brother of the art historian Gustav Friedrich Waagen (1794–1868). His younger brother was the geologist Wilhelm Heinrich Waagen (1841–1900), another brother was the painter Adalbert Waagen (1834–1898). The geologist Lukas Waagen (1877-1959) was one of his nephews.

Military career

Libra embarked on a military career. As a volunteer he joined the 2nd Infantry Regiment "Crown Prince" of the Bavarian Army in Munich on December 5, 1848 and in 1852 became a corporal . On June 25, 1854, he was transferred as a Junker to the Infantry Body Regiment , where he became a second lieutenant in 1855 . In 1859/63 Waagen acted as adjutant to Major General Wolfgang von Ott . In 1863 he was promoted to first lieutenant and in 1866 to captain . On September 12, 1866, he became adjutant to Johann Baptist Stephan , general commander of the city of Nuremberg. In 1867 he was awarded the Knight's Cross, Class II, of the Military Merit Order for his services in the German-German War . During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 Waagen acted as chief adjutant of the 1st Infantry Division and in 1871 received the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of Military Merit.

In 1876 he was promoted to major , in 1882 to lieutenant colonel in the 1st infantry regiment "König" and on March 30, 1886 to colonel . From April 17, 1886 to March 7, 1889, Waagen was in command of the 18th Infantry Regiment "Prince Ludwig Ferdinand" in Landau . On this day he was promoted to major general and on March 8, 1889, he became commander of the 5th Infantry Brigade in Zweibrücken . From 1890 until his retirement from military service on June 9, 1892, he was in command of the 8th Infantry Brigade in Metz .

In 1892 Waagen was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown, with which the personal title of nobility of “Knight of” was associated. This ennoblement took place on June 20, 1892.

From 1895 Waagen officiated as President of the Bavarian Veterans and Warriors' Association.

family

Libra married Marie Freiin von Großschedel. She was the niece of Major General Christian von Großschedel and daughter of the Bavarian officer Joseph Freiherr von Großschedel and his wife Auguste von Weling . The latter was the child of the ennobled Jewish convert Eduard von Weling (previously Eduard Seligmann) and the granddaughter of the Bavarian court factor Aron Elias von Eichthal (previously Aron Elias Seligmann).
