Lukas Waagen (born April 27, 1877 in Vienna ; † August 4, 1959 there ) was an Austrian geologist .

Life

Lukas Waagen was the middle of three sons of the paleontologist Wilhelm Heinrich Waagen and his wife Sophie Freiin von Großschedel, niece of the Bavarian Major General Christian von Großschedel . Sophie von Großschedel’s mother was the daughter of the ennobled Jewish convert Eduard von Weling (previously Eduard Seligmann) and the granddaughter of the Bavarian court factor Aron Elias von Eichthal (previously Aron Elias Seligmann).

After graduating from high school, Waagen devoted himself to studying geology with Eduard Suess and Viktor Uhlig at the University of Vienna from 1897 , which he completed in 1901 with the academic degree of Dr. phil. completed. After working as an assistant at the chair for geology at the University of Vienna for one year, Waagen joined the Imperial and Royal Geological Institute in 1901 . Waagen, accepted as a member of the Geological Society in Vienna in 1907 , appointed Oberbergrat in 1921, retired as a councilor in 1937 . In 1910 and 1926 Waagen was appointed President of the Commission for the Publication of the International Stratigraphic Lexicon by the International Geological Congress . In 1926 Waagen was a co-founder of the International Petroleum Union, a society for science and practice for the extraction and development of petroleum, of which he was president until 1938.

Waagen carried out mappings in Istria and Dalmatia as well as Styria . His scientific work includes special geological maps, geological-topographical work, paleontological topics of practical geology and mountain economy.

His brother Wilhelm Waagen (1875–1960), who was born in Calcutta , became a Pater Hildebrand Benedictine in the Seckau Abbey and worked a. a. as pastor of the Traboch parish .
