List of the Bavarian regiments of the early modern period

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Electorate of Bavaria received a standing army in 1681 - as a reaction to the fact that the Reichstag had obliged the estates to a "miles perpetuus". The first important combat operation was the liberation of Vienna in 1682. From 1742–1745, the Bavarian troops added the phrase “imperial” . The present list of regiments from the early modern period ends here in 1777, when the Electorate of Bavaria fell to Elector Theodor of the Palatinate . The further history of the troops was to be continued as "Pfalz-Bayern". In 1790 these united troops were given a uniform numbering. Since the 17th century, a large number of temporarily existing regiments have been set up, mostly on the occasion of campaigns. They are not yet part of this overview.

Explanation of the system

Until the takeover by the Electoral Palatinate in 1777, the regiments were only named after their regiment chiefs. The official numbering was not introduced. The present numbering is based on Hans Bleckwenn's system . In addition to the numbering given to new establishments after the dissolution of individual regiments, the year of foundation is added to the regiments below. This is intended to facilitate comparability. This numbering consistently follows the Ticino line-ups. If several regiments were founded in one year, Ticino added a second number (e.g. "1753/1" = first regiment that was set up in 1753). This is followed by the names of the regiment chiefs or the name (possibly name of the commander).

Meaning of the characters used: "*" = foundation, "†" = dissolution, "<" = origin, ">" = whereabouts, "=" = double function as a standing regiment of an imperial estate.

Tribe list for 1777

The present list shows the regiments at the time of the Wittelsbach extinction. It is essentially the troops that also took part in the Seven Years War .
