On October 9, 1916, the regiment received a 2nd and 3rd MG company during the trench warfare in Flanders and Artois . After the heavy defensive battles between Scarpe and Somme and because no adequate replacements could be made available, the 4th, 5th and 9th companies were disbanded on September 1, 1918. In addition, from April 19 to 22, 1919, the II. Volkswehr Battalion Bayreuth (Volunteer Battalion Lienhardt) was formed with 6th – 8th. Company. Both formations went in June 1919 in the III. Battalion of the Reichswehr Infantry Regiment 46.
The tradition in the Reichswehr was taken over by the 9th and 12th companies of the 21st (Bavarian) Infantry Regiment in Bayreuth on August 24, 1921 .
Regimental owner
The commander is to be distinguished from a regiment owner , who thus only held an honorary position, although the regiment bore his name (e.g. from 1873 to 1919, Prince Leopold of Bavaria ). The term vacant literally means that the regimental ownership was not occupied at the time. The term line regiment means that no ownership was planned and the regiment only had its number.

Commanders
The regiment was commanded by a colonel commander, from 1872 by a commander, with the rank of colonel . In some cases the next lower rank of lieutenant colonel was also qualified to lead a regiment. During the First World War, representation by staff officers or battalion commanders in the rank of major was customary if a new colonel was not available in time. Towards the end of the war the regiment had shrunk to less than 1,000 men and was then only led by majors. This was also due to the fact that no other senior officers were available due to the war.
