The Makoshika State Park is south east of Glendive in Dawson County of the US state of Montana . It is located at an altitude of 736 m and is the largest state park in Montana with an area of ​​47 km² . Ma-ko-shi-ka in the language of the Sioux Indians roughly means bad earth , badlands .

The Yellowstone River and its tributaries unearthed in the course of millennia rock layers to the sediments of the 65 million year old Hell Creek Formation of the Cretaceous belong. Hundreds of dinosaur bones and complete skeletons have been found from this era, some of which are on display in the Visitor Center, the Makoshiko Dinosaur Museum in Glendive, and other museums along the Montana Dinosaur Trail . The species found include Triceratops , Thescelosaurus, and Tyrannosaurus Rex, as well as Habrosaurus , Hadrosaurus , Ankylosaurus, and Ornithomimus . Among the 40 living bird species, the turkey vulture is the reason for the annual Buzzard Day , which celebrates the arrival of migratory birds. There are also 5 species of bats, larger mammals and 150 species of plants to be found in the park.

In 1893 there were the first efforts to put parts of today's state park under protection, in 1939 land donations took place and in 1953 the Makoshika State Park was designated.

In addition to the visitor center, the park also has two campsites, a wheelchair-accessible amphitheater for outdoor events and a course for frisbee golf . In 2001 46,000 visitors were counted.
