Jürgen Kraus (historian)

Jürgen Kraus (born January 6, 1951 in Herford ) is a German military historian and museum curator .

Life

Kraus was born the son of a customs councilor and his wife. After attending primary school and graduating from the Friedrichs-Gymnasium Herford in 1969, he did his basic military service in the Bundeswehr in 1970/71.

He then studied history , social sciences and art history at the University of Münster . In 1976 he passed the first state examination for higher teaching qualifications. In the summer semester 1979 he was with Werner Hahlweg at the Philosophical Faculty with the dissertation The military system of the imperial city Augsburg, 1548-1806. Comparative studies of urban military facilities in Germany from 16. – 18. Century to Dr. phil. PhD.

He then became a curator (later chief curator ) with a focus on uniforms and flags at the Bavarian Army Museum in Ingolstadt. There he was also a consultant for the document and photo archive until his retirement in 2011. He published several books on military history, including a handbook on the German army of the Empire .

Kraus was also a member of the board of the German Army Research Association from 1994 to 2010 .
