Reinhard von Helmstatt (* 1400 ; † 1456 ) was the 62nd Bishop of Speyer from 1438 to 1456.

Life

The von Helmstatt family had chosen Reinhard, son of bailiff Hans I. von Helmstatt (1366-1422) and Guta Knebel von Katzenelnbogen (* 1371), Bishop Raban's great-nephew, to succeed Raban von Helmstatt in the Speyer bishopric . In order to be able to become bishop, Reinhard first had to take over the Speyer cathedral propstamt , which was occupied by his brother Heinrich von Helmstatt. From 1424 he was forced to give up the office. After a written oath, Heinrich was arrested by Hans II von Helmstatt, another brother and then bailiff of Lauterburg, and arrested until 1436.

Reinhard laid the foundation stone for the Liebfrauenkirche in Bruchsal in 1447 .

The Speyer bishop Ludwig von Helmstatt († 1504) and the Speyer bishop elect and cathedral provost Ulrich von Helmstatt († 1488) were his nephews.

In 1444 he called the Carmelite prior Petrus Spitznagel to be his auxiliary bishop; he remained in office for over 20 years.

coat of arms

The prince-bishop's coat of arms is usually quartered . The fields of the coat of arms alternate with the family coat of arms of the Helmstatt, a raven on silver and the coat of arms of the diocese of Speyer, a silver cross on a blue background.
