The novel begins two years after the accident. Jonah has problems at school. His new teacher, Sarah Andrews, who returned to her parents' home after her divorce from Baltimore , helps him. The shy Miles and the lonely Sarah slowly get closer to each other over the boy's school difficulties. They both fall in love. A police informer alleges that Otis, a local criminal, was involved in Missy's accident. Miles is furious against Otis, which however incurs the anger of his boss. Since Miles has taken action against Otis without evidence and on his own, he is under investigation. Sarah wants to mediate and mediate, but is rejected by Miles. Sarah consults with her brother Brian, who finally reveals himself to be the driver involved in the accident. Sarah brings her brother to Miles, whom Brian admits to have killed Missy. Miles suspects that Sarah has known for a long time and feels betrayed. On the way to the station, Miles causes a traffic accident in which Brian is slightly injured. Sarah arrives and wants to take the bleeding brother to the hospital. Miles releases the handcuffs and lets the siblings go.

Miles has a remorse. He informs his supervisor Charlie that he has wrongly suspected his enemy Otis of the crime. When he then realizes that all of Brian's information about the course of the accident in which Missy died is correct, he reconsiders and does not take action against Brian. Brian moves to California. Miles reconciles with Sarah.
