Walram from Veldenz
Walram von Veldenz († August 27, 1336 ) was Bishop of Speyer from 1329 to 1336.
origin
His father, Count Heinrich I von Hohengeroldseck († 1298), had a second marriage with Agnes von Veldenz, heir to the county of the same name . She was the great niece of Archbishop of Mainz Gerhard I von Dhaun and of Freising Bishop Konrad II ; Well-known cousins of her father Gerlach V. von Veldenz are the Upper German Templar Provincial Master Friedrich Wildgraf von Kyrburg and Bishop Emicho Wildgraf von Kyrburg .
After the male line of the original Veldenz family died out in 1259 and Heinrich I and his wife took over the government there as heir, he called himself Count von Veldenz . The son Walram also bore this gender name, which was adopted from the maternal line.
The bishop's brother, Count Georg I von Veldenz , royal bailiff in Speyergau , married Agnes von Leiningen, the sister of the Speyer bishop Emich von Leiningen .
Life
Walram von Veldenz appears in a document as early as 1277 as cathedral curator of Speyer, around 1314 he became provost of the cathedral . In the same year he is also proven as a canon in Strasbourg , 1321-1327 he was also provost there.
After the death of the Speyer bishop Emich von Leiningen (1328) the cathedral chapter elected him bishop, while Pope Johannes XXII. Berthold von Buchegg appointed to it. Since he insisted on his rights, Buchegg was transferred to Strasbourg in October of that year and the Pope confirmed Walram von Veldenz on May 9, 1329 as Bishop of Speyer. Walram was a supporter of Ludwig of Bavaria and represented the interests of his lineage relatives. Due to the long-term financial difficulties of the bishopric, the bishop handed over his secular functions to an administrator in the person of Baldwin of Luxembourg in 1330/1331 . Walram never received episcopal ordination. His first episcopal document from August 25, 1329 is an appeal for donations in favor of the church of St. Philip the hermit in Zell .
Walram von Veldenz died in 1336 and, according to his wishes, was buried in front of the high altar of the Dominican Church in Speyer .
coat of arms
The prince-bishop's coat of arms is usually quartered . The fields of the coat of arms alternate with the family coat of arms of the Veldenz and the coat of arms of the diocese of Speyer, a silver cross on a blue background. The family coat of arms of the Counts of Veldenz is an upright striding blue lion on a silver background.
