Siegfried III. von Venningen († September 2, 1459 in Heidelberg ) was bishop of the Principality of Speyer from 1456 to 1459 .

Life

Siegfried III. came from the right Hilsbach line of the von Venningen family , whose line Venningen-Neidenstein was named after Neidenstein Castle . After the historian Franz Xaver Remling , Siegfried III was. the son of Eberhard von Venningen and his wife Else von Fellberg and when he was elected he held the offices of the Speyer Cathedral Scholaster and the Provost in the Allerheiligen monastery . He was the first family member to become a canon in the diocese of Speyer and he was the only one to become a bishop. The elevated position of the family, which enabled access to the offices, went back to the sister's marriage to Konrad von Helmstatt . Siegfried's brother Nikolaus was also able to embark on a spiritual career. Konrad von Helmstatt was Heidelberger Vogt and bailiff of Amberg and a grandnephew of former Bishop Raban of Helmstatt .

Siegfried von Venningen received in 1456, on Sunday after All Saints, in the Abbey Maulbronn , by the Wormser Pastors Reinhard of Sickingen episcopal ordination, Mitkonsekrator was the Speyer Auxiliary Bishop Peter Spitznagel .

Sculptures from his epitaph in Speyer Cathedral have been preserved and are exhibited in the Afra chapel .

The bishop appointed his eldest brother Eberhard von Venningen to be court master . In 1457 he appointed Dieter, the second-born, to be the bishop's bailiff at Bruhrain . He was married to Else von Hornberg and had with her the son Zurich von Venningen, who was already at the episcopal ordination of Siegfried III. is recorded in his wake. The youngest brother of Bishop Siegfried was Nikolaus von Venningen, Cathedral Chapter in Speyer.

The prince-bishop's coat of arms is usually quartered . The fields of the coat of arms alternate with the family coat of arms of the von Venningen, two crossed red lilies or glazes on silver and the coat of arms of the diocese of Speyer, a silver cross on a blue background.
