The Institute of Environmental Science & Research Limited (ESR) is one of eight Crown Research Institutes in New Zealand .

The institute's task is to develop scientific solutions in the areas of health , environmental health and forensic services and to offer appropriate advisory services. Research contracts come mainly from the two state clients, the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology (MoRST) and the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FRST) (Foundation for Research, Science and Technology) ), but also from the private sector and sometimes even from overseas.

Seat

The head office is in Wellington . In addition to the Kenepuru Science Center in Wellington, the ESR operates three other research centers across the country: a) the Mount Albert Science Center in Auckland , b) the Christchurch Science Center in Christchurch and the ESR NCBID-Wallaceville in Upper Hutt .

history

In the 1980s, the New Zealand government began to restructure research and science . In 1989, the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology was created for this purpose with the aim of advising the government, preparing decision-making processes, prioritizing the allocation of funds and introducing success monitoring. But that's not all. The aim was to create different institutes for the most varied areas of activity, which would operate independently and responsibly under government supervision and which would then, under these conditions, carry out public and private-sector contracts with their own rules and guidelines .

With the Crown Research Institutes Act 1992 , ten Crown Research Institutes were founded for this purpose, eight of which still exist today. The ESR is one of them.

With the Companies Act 1993 , all institutions were converted into limited companies. Like all other Crown Research Institutes , the ESR is now subordinate to the Crown Company Unit (controlling and advisory department) of the Ministry of Finance and the responsible Minister for Research, Science and Technology. Both ministers responsible are always registered as shareholders of the eight Crown Research Institutes .
