Location of the municipality | ||
Betanzos is a town in the Spanish autonomous region of Galicia belonging province of A Coruña . The city is about 25 kilometers away from the provincial capital A Coruña . It is located on a hill near the mouth of the Mandeo River in the Atlantic Ocean .
history
The place was previously identified with the Roman port Flavium Brigantium , but today it is located in A Coruña .
The settlement has been occupied since 1219, when the population moved from the old village to the current location, which is located above the old Celtic fortress of Untia.
In 1465 Henry IV of Castile granted city rights. Years later, the Catholic kings determined that Betanzos should be the capital of the province. During this time the city experienced its greatest growth. Nevertheless, more frequent fires and poor harvests indicate the increasing decline, which was further exacerbated in 1834 when Javier de Burgos integrated the old province of Betanzos into the province of A Coruña as part of the new administrative division.
After the city was revitalized by the construction of the railway, it is now an important place for tourism, business and administration.
