Ribeira ( Spanish Riveira ) is a municipality , a parroquia and a place in the autonomous community of Galicia in the province of A Coruña , in the north of Spain . The 26,886 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) live on an area of 68.8 km², 141 kilometers from the government capital A Coruña .
Ribeira is also the administrative center of the Comarca Barbanza .
history
As everywhere in Barbanza , remains from the megalithic culture can be found in the municipality of Ribeira . Dolmens and ramparts still bear witness to this today.
The first written mention of Ribeira comes from a church document from 1438.
Over the centuries, the community has repeatedly been the scene of violent attacks by the Vikings , the Saracens and numerous pirates .
