Location of the municipality

Corcubión is a municipality in the province of A Coruña in the Autonomous Community of Galicia in Spain . Corcubión is located on the river of the same name not far from Cape Finisterre and on the extended Way of St. James, the Camino a Fisterra .

history

The natural harbor of the place was already heavily frequented in antiquity , some historians equate it with the Arretrebarum portus of ancient sources. The name of the place, which probably comes from the Celtic , is evidence of the age of the settlement.

Until the 13th century, the settlement core was located further inland to protect against attacks from the sea. According to a description from 1742, about 200 inhabitants lived in the village, who lived from fishing and salt production in salt pans .

Later in the 18th century, wealthy Catalan families took over the salt pans and expanded them considerably. As a result, the town experienced an economic upswing that lasted until the beginning of the 20th century, but was then replaced by a deep economic crisis that led to numerous emigration, especially in the area around Buenos Aires . A home association founded there had at the wedding with 3,000 members twice as many relatives as Corcubión residents.
