Location of the municipality

Muros is a municipality and a small town in the Spanish province of A Coruña , within the autonomous region of Galicia in northern Spain . It is located about 60 km west of Santiago de Compostela on the northern coast of the fjord-like incision Ría de Muros e Noia . The municipality consists of the localities Abelleira, Esteiro, Louro, Muros, Serres, Tal and Torea.

history

As in many areas of Galicia, finds from the Stone Age around Muros are evidence of the long settlement of the entire region. Particularly noteworthy are the petroglyphs (stone symbols) of the Laxe das Rodas and the Cova da Bruxa , which are located in the mountains above the city. They are considered excellent examples of megalithic relief art in Galicia.

economy

The fishing industry is the community's main employer. The largest fishing cooperative in the region is based in Muros . Mussel farming is of particular importance. There are extensive mussel farms in the Ria de Muros e Noia . Regular fish auctions take place in the auction hall at the harbor, where regional traders buy freshly caught fish and seafood and deliver to the restaurants. Tourism also plays a certain role in the summer months. The Way of St. James ends at Cape Finisterre about 25 km northwest of Muros . Occasionally, pilgrims their way back to Santiago de Compostela on Muros and place in a one station.
